ABOUT CHIBOMBO

Chibombo District, formerly Kabwe Rural is located in the Central Province of Zambia. It lies between

27o15’ and 29o East of Greenwich and latitudes 14º25’ and 15º South of the Equator. The district shares

boundaries with Lusaka City on the South, Kabwe on the North, Chongwe and Chisamba on the East,

Mumbwa and Shibuyunji on the West, Kapiri Mposhi and Ngabwe on North West and Mkushi districts on

the south eastern part.

The administrative centre is about 95 km away from Lusaka and approximately 50 km from Kabwe. The

District covers a total surface area of 8, 342 km2

Generally, the climatic conditions are characterized by wet summers and dry winters. The district receives

good rainfall with an annual average of 800 to 1000mm, although it varies from season to season. This is

suitable for the cultivation of most crops. The temperature distribution is usually in the range of 29oC mean

monthly temperatures in summer and 200C mean monthly temperatures in winter.

1.4.2 Topography

Chibombo District is a relatively high plateau which is typical for most areas of Central Province, consisting

of a soft undulating plain. Its altitude is mostly around 1,300m above mean sea level. The district also has

some small hills scattered in most parts of the district. They include Chikombwe hills in Cholokelo ward

and Kanwanjiba hills in Chilochabalenje ward.

The district has about fourteen rivers and streams of which Momboshi, Mwembeshi, Mulungushi and

Lunjofwa are the largest rivers – see figure 1.3. The Momboshi River drains into Mulungushi River, while

Mulungushi drains into Lunsefwa. The Lunjofwa River drains into the Lukanga swamps, while the

Mwembeshi drains into the Kafue River. In spite of having rivers in the district most of them are seasonal

and run dry in the dry season.

The district also has the famous Lukanga swamp, which mainly provides fish and grazing for cattle in the

dry season. The swamp has an area size of about 2, 600 km2

. There are 29 fishing camps on the swamp of
