Government has developed a national policy to guide operations of the sector local government minister Vincent Mwale has said.
The Minister said the sector has been operating without guidelines since 1950 when the fire and rescue service was established in Zambia.
Mr Mwale said recently this recently when he officiated at the 7th fire brigade annual ball that the ministry had engaged a consultant to carry out consultations and submit a draft policy.
‘’We are concerned that most areas, especially unplanned settlement have no fire hydrants. this has affected fire-fighting operations. But we will soon work on an overhaul water reticulation system”, he said.
Mr. Mwale said new water pipes which will also have hydrants for firefighting purposes, are being set up in Lusaka.
He said more fire hydrants will be procured and allocated to fire authorities to be installed in strategic areas for effective and efficient operations.
